In the 2019 World Cup, Jofra Archer provided England with wicket taking capacity which turned them into a potential contender. Without Archer, England’s 2023 ODI side would be basically their 2019 World Cup ODI side (before Archer appeared), albeit with slightly better batting form. I say “slightly better”, because England’s batting methods are developed on and for English pitches, against predominantly seam bowling.
In the 2019 World Cup, there were 7695 balls of spin and 16356 balls of seam - 32% spin. In the 2023 World Cup so far, there have been 902 balls of spin and 1157 balls of seam - 44% spin. With the best will in the world, going by their record, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali do not provide England with the wicket taking heft. It is one thing to be a spinner when there’s about 16 overs of spin in an innings. It is quite another to be a spinner when there’s about 22 overs of spin in an innings. The conditions are different, as are the demands.
In 2019, Jofra Archer provided England with wicket taking muscle which they otherwise lacked. This has also been true for them since 2023. Just as India do not have a second player like Hardik Pandya - a fast bowler who can bat in the middle order - England don’t have a replacement for Jofra Archer - a wicket taking powerhouse with both new ball and old.
Mark Wood is a better bowler in 2023 than he was in 2019. But he’s not, judging by his record, in the Archer/Bumrah/Starc class. England currently have nobody they can throw the ball to if they need a wicket - nobody who is significantly better than all their other bowlers who make up their 50 overs.
One (well founded) view about England have runs the sums and that they know this, and hence have made the choice to leave out anybody who might be considered a tailender and try and make up in late order runs what they lose in bowling quality. But England did not win the 2019 World Cup because they made this trade-off. They won it because Jofra Archer offered them an option which made that trade-off significantly less acute. He offered them wickets, basically on demand.
Every contender in this World Cup will need its Jofra Archer. Just as every contender will require a powerpacked top seven.
