Statistically, Shakib Al Hasan is the finest Test all rounder of his generation. He does not tweet often. But as Bangladesh faced a depleted South Africa at Kingsmead this week, he had this to say on the 4th day of the Test.

It was an unusual day. Three reviews were upheld. Nevertheless, Shakib’s demand for neutral umpires was strange since South Africa and Bangladesh had benefited from 4 successful reviews each at that point.

The average ICC panel umpire gets between 1 and 3.3 decisions wrong per Test on average. The median Test umpire gets 1.7 decisions per Test wrong. These are successfully reversed upon review. On average, this means that between 2.5 and 5 decisions per Test are successfully reversed. There’s nothing in the record to suggest that umpires favor the home team or that they are especially harsh on the visiting team.
When players complain about umpires, it should be taken with a large pinch of salt.
