Objective analysis. Wanted to ask your thinking about this line - "Barring Shubman Gill, none of them provide any evidence that they will do better than Rahane or Pujara." - Vihari was always touted as someone who did well in Domestic cricket. Why do you not consider him as someone who could do better than Pujara? He has hardly got 2 matches in a row and always had to play a defensive role. Would like to hear your views.

I'm not sure what a "defensive role" is.

The question is not whether Vihari has done well - of course he has. The question is whether there is evidence to show that he is likely to do better than Rahane or Pujara. Comparing their first class records to his, and their Test records to his, the reasonable answer is that there isn't evidence to suggest that he is likely to do better than them.

Ofcourse one can't drop a player better than VVS Laxman. But you can drop a player like H Vihari who hasn't disappointed yet.

Hello. This is some great analysis, but from which database did you obtain the FC data tabulated in your piece? There is discrepancy between that and the FC data for the stated players on ESPN CricInfo. Is there a filter you applied to the same?

It is not the players first class record (which includes Test matches as well). It is the players record in first class matches in the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and India A - i.e. outside their selection for the India squad.
